“Camp is for the counselors”
Have you ever heard this phrase while working at camp? If so, then you likely know what I mean. If not, let me explain a little. Camp is for everyone who gets to attend. Camp is for first-time campers who don't yet understand its awesomeness. Camp is for the long time campers who know that each time they go to camp they love it more and more. Camp is for the adventurous, and the shy. Camp is for the staffers, new and old, who will experience the best kind of community ever. Camp is for anyone and everyone.
Lennox Bishop, who grew up in Asheville, NC, knows firsthand how incredible camp and the outdoors can be. She first attended Camp Cedar Cliff when she was 6. Once she was old enough she started working there, eventually becoming a camp counselor. Her passion for the outdoors was a perfect fit for the program. Lennox has been outside for as long as she can remember. Growing up, her parents always brought her and her 4 siblings outdoors. Everything outdoors was an adventure from biking, hiking, camping, and much more. For her, camp combines the three things she loves most, Jesus, community, and the outdoors!
Being a camp counselor was always on her bucket list from day one of being a camper. Camp counselors have such a strong impact on the campers and she wanted to have an impact just like her counselors did with her. Being a camp counselor typically means spending countless hours outside, and with kids who look up to every step you take. Being a counselor, she got to spend her summers outdoors while also leading kids and showing them how awesome the outdoors can be. Even if the wilderness isn't your forte at first, the outdoors has an indescribable power to enchant even the most unsuspecting guest.
Lennox describes the outdoors as, “Something special. I can so clearly see the creativity and power of my Creator! I see His hand in every detail of the outdoors. I also find that the community is cultivated so well outdoors. I am just the happiest and healthiest when I am spending lots of time adventuring outside.”
So, take it from Lennox, don’t be afraid to get your hands and feet a little muddy! The memories and fun you’ll have are so worth it! Maybe you’ll meet your best friend while on camp out, or while trying to make a fire! There is so much community to be discovered outside the walls of your house.
